Senior Member Account Moderator As far as I can tell, TOAD on MS Windows 7 works fine. It doesn't matter whether you install TOAD first, or Oracle Client first. What bothers TOAD is that it 'hates' to be installed into a directory whose name contains brackets. As TOAD is 32-bit application, it - as any other 32-bit application installed on 64-bit Windows - goes into 'Program Files (x86)' directory. Well, TOAD complains about it. You might even get ORA-12514 or ORA-06413, although everything was installed successfully. After hours of Googling, I found that TOAD should be installed into a directory whose name doesn't contain brackets.
'(x86)' contains them so - avoid it. I thought: what the heck, I'll put it into 'Program Files'. Directory as any other. Well, not really. Installer created some files in (x86) anyway, so this installation was really a garbage. Therefore, I chose 'C: Toad' as a destination directory, installed TOAD in there and everything works OK. I read contents of the page you suggested. No major objections, but one: the first sentence: Quote: Did you ever get frustrated when you want to connect with your oracle database, but you have to install everything from oracle client software cd and waste for hundreds megs only to get connect with your database?
That's nonsense. 'Install everything'? Oracle Universal Installer suggests several options, such as Instant Client, Runtime, and - oh, guess what? - Custom installation which enables you to choose individual components to install. 'Waste hundreds of megs'? Instant Client (10.2.0.1.0) needs 498 MB.
The same Instant Client ZIP file occupies 463.956 KB on disk. In order to use it (the way person who wrote that article says), you have to unzip it. How many MB would that waste?
Hundreds of megs, right? So what difference does it make whether you actually install the Client software or just have it unzipped on disk? None, regarding the space. You might, however, find some difficulties trying to use certain functionalities because you didn't install the Client (because you chose to save hundreds of megs; right).
